Twokeep is not available yet. These pages describe the iPhone app as it is being tested, and details can change before launch.
What the phrase is
Your recovery key exists in two places, both yours: a copy saved for iCloud Keychain, and a recovery phrase of 24 words. If you lose your iPhone and the iCloud Keychain copy, the phrase is the only way back into your vaults.
Anyone who has the 24 words can use your recovery key. They still cannot open anything with it alone: a new iPhone also needs your partner's approval.
Write it down
In the Security screen, open Recovery phrase. After Face ID, Twokeep shows the 24 words. Write them on paper in this order, or print them as a QR code, and keep them somewhere safe. Then type three of the words to confirm. Twokeep does not show the phrase again on that iPhone.
Twokeep asks for the phrase only when you set up a new iPhone. Anyone else who asks for it is not Twokeep. Support will never ask for it.
Moving to a new iPhone
If you still have your old iPhone, move directly. On the old iPhone, open Security and tap Move to a new iPhone. On the new one, tap Move from my old iPhone. Each iPhone scans the other's code, and you confirm on the new iPhone. Your keys for every vault move across; if the new iPhone does not confirm in time, the move is cancelled and the old one keeps working.
Afterwards, compare the safety code with your partner in each vault. Viewing still needs your partner's approval each time.
If your iPhone is lost
Sign in on the new iPhone and choose My old iPhone is lost. Twokeep uses the recovery key in your iCloud Keychain, or asks you to type the 24 words or scan the code you printed.
Then your partner approves the new iPhone in each vault, after comparing a fresh safety code with you in person or on a video call. Your vaults stay closed on the new iPhone until they do. Approving does not show you anything: every viewing still needs their approval, capture locks stay, and removed items stay removed.
While you wait for your partner, you can sign the lost iPhone out from the new one.
If nothing is left
Without your recovery key and without your old iPhone, your half of each key cannot be recovered. The items in your vaults can then not be viewed by either of you, except those your partner holds under a permanent share. Twokeep support cannot recover them, and your partner cannot replace your half.
Check your recovery health to see whether you are covered.
